Mickey Peled, the founder of modern Israeli entertainment and the creator of the famous annual music festival, Festigal, has died at the age of 87. This has been confirmed by members of Peled’s family and distinguished figures from the industry on Monday.
Throughout six decades, Peled has contributed to the commercial entertainment and performing arts industry in Israel in a very significant way. As a manager of Solan Productions, Peled managed many of the best musical acts. In 1981, Peled created his most important achievement in his professional life: the first Festigal music festival in Haifa. Peled’s idea was to organise a music competition for children for the Hanukkah holiday.
For generations of families, Festigal served as a defining hallmark of childhood as well as an essential springboard for emerging theatrical and pop music stars.
In recognition of his monumental contributions to national culture, Peled was awarded the prestigious ACUM Lifetime Achievement Award. His innovative approach to scale, stage technology, and family-orientated programming raised technical and creative benchmarks for theatrical productions across the entire region.
Following the announcement of his death, leading figures from across the cultural sector paid emotional tribute to the late producer. Veteran entertainers including Tal Mosseri, Chani Nahmias, and Tzipi Shavit expressed deep grief, remembering Peled as an industry titan who possessed both visionary ambition and personal warmth. Mosseri recalled him as a father figure and trusted mentor known for his wise counsel, while Nahmias described him as a legendary “super-producer” whose legacy permanently transformed Israeli performance arts. Shavit added that Peled possessed a unique ability to dream on a grand scale and successfully turn those grand artistic visions into reality.
Culture ministry representatives, venue operators, and fellow producers expressed heartfelt condolences to the Peled family, noting that his trailblazing work established a lasting standard for live event production. Peled leaves behind an indelible mark on Middle Eastern commercial theatre, having built a cultural framework that continues to entertain millions of young audience members and families annually.
