Safety procedures have been undertaken by environmentalists and managers after stormy weather conditions led to suspended sediment and organic material concentrations exceeding processing limits within the Mediterranean Sea.
The unexpected decline in the volume of treated water became a problem in terms of distribution through the national water network. The presence of high levels of turbidity can affect reverse osmosis membrane filters, and thus, the water treatment plants had no other choice but to stop their pumps to avoid any serious damage. National water management organisations took timely actions in order to regulate water supplies by drawing more water from secondary water reservoirs.
